Join our team of divers in our efforts to protect and preserve the underwater environment. Participate in cleanups, fish surveys, coral restoration, research projects, and more.
If you want to be part of one of the biggest citizen science program you can start learning how to participate in the REEF Volunteer Fish Survey Project. Since its launch in 1993, this citizen science program has generated one of the largest marine life database in the world. In 2020, the database surpassed 250,000 surveys conducted at almost 15,000 sites throughout the world’s oceans by over 16,000 volunteer divers and snorkelers worldwide.
Here at BIOdiversE, We will teach you how to identify the most common species of fish that you encounter on your dives or snorkels and how to submit your surveys on REEF website. You can become a TWA Level 2 fish surveyor by completing two survey dives and passing the fish quiz scoring at least 80%.
You can also opt for taking the PADI Project Aware Fish ID specialty course and will help you attain this level.
About the roving diver survey method: during RDT surveys, divers and snorkelers swim
freely throughout a site and record every observed fish species that can be positively identified. Species and approximate abundance scores are recorded on an underwater slate. You start recording as soon as you enter the water and the goal is to find as many species as possible. you can look under ledges and up
in the water column and you can even report sea turtle species.
If you want more about the Sea Turtle program and how to identify all the seven species of sea turtles you can sign up for our AWARE Sea Turtle specialty course or join us on our dedicated dives to dive or snorkel with sea turtles.
With knowledge, training and the opportunity to get involved, these marine citizen scientists make significant and ongoing contributions.
